Music Friday: Greenwood's Wife Has a 'Ring on Her Finger, Time on Her Hands'

Welcome to Music Friday when we feature songs with jewelry, gemstones or precious metals in the title or lyrics. Today, we revisit "Ring on Her Finger, Time on Her Hands," Lee Greenwood’s poignant 1982 country hit that uses the symbolism of a wedding band to tell the story of a marriage slowly falling apart.

Written by Pam Rose, Mary Ann Kennedy and Don Goodman, the song centers on a lonely young wife trapped in what Greenwood calls a “three-bedroom prison.” At the beginning of the relationship, the ring on her finger represented commitment, hope and lifelong devotion. But as emotional distance grows between husband and wife, that cherished symbol begins to lose its warmth and meaning.

The song’s most powerful jewelry imagery arrives in the heartbreaking line: “The gold turned cold in her wedding band.” In just a few words, the songwriters transform a simple piece of jewelry into a vivid emotional metaphor. Gold traditionally symbolizes enduring love, permanence and value, but here the once-warm wedding band becomes emotionally “cold,” reflecting neglect, loneliness and the collapse of intimacy within the marriage.

Another key lyric — “She had a ring on her finger and time on her hands” — contrasts outward appearances with inner reality. To the outside world, the ring signals a happy marriage. But the endless “time on her hands” reveals isolation and emotional abandonment. The jewelry becomes less a badge of love and more a reminder of what’s missing in the relationship.

Released in February 1982, the song became one of Greenwood’s early signature hits, climbing to #5 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart. It appeared on his album Inside Out and helped cement his reputation as one of country music’s premier storytellers.

Born Melvin Lee Greenwood in South Gate in 1942, Greenwood spent years performing in Las Vegas casinos and even worked as a blackjack dealer before finally breaking through in Nashville in the early 1980s. His career soared with a string of hits, culminating in the patriotic anthem God Bless the U.S.A., which became one of the most recognizable songs in American music.

More than four decades later, Greenwood remains active on the road. His 2026 tour schedule includes appearances in Virginia, Wisconsin, Indiana, Alabama and Iowa, with many performances tied to celebrations leading up to America’s 250th anniversary in July.

The song also enjoyed a successful second life when Reba McEntire recorded her own version in 1995. Her rendition reached #9 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart, introducing the emotionally charged ballad to a new generation of country fans.

Please check out the audio track of Greenwood singing “Ring on Her Finger, Time on Her Hands." The lyrics are below if you'd like to sing along…

“Ring on Her Finger, Time on Her Hands”
Written by Don Goodman, Pam Rose and Mary Ann Kennedy. Performed by Lee Greenwood.

She stood before God, her family and friends
And vowed that she’d never love anyone else again, only me
As pure as her gown of white she stood by my side
And promised that she'd love me until the day she died
Lord, please forgive her even though she lied
Because you’re the only one who knows how hard she tried

She had a ring on her finger and time on her hands
The woman in her needed the warmth of a man
The gold turned cold in her wedding band
It’s just a ring on your finger
When there’s time on your hands

When I add up all the countless nights she cried herself to sleep
And all the broken promises I somehow failed to keep
I can’t blame her

I'm the one who left her too many times alone
In a three bedroom prison she tried to make a home
Her love slowly died but the fire inside still burned
And the arms of a stranger was the only place left to turn

She had a ring on her finger and time on her hands
The woman in her needed the warmth of a man
The gold turned cold in her wedding band
It’s just a ring on your finger
When there’s time

She had a ring on her finger and time on her hands
The woman in her needed the warmth of a man
The gold turned cold in her wedding band
It’s just a ring on your finger
When there’s time on your hands
