Ancient Greek Elites Adorned Themselves With Rings Made From Meteoric Iron

More than 3,000 years ago, some of the most powerful people in the Aegean world may have worn jewelry made from a material that was literally out of this world. New research suggests that Minoan and Mycenaean elites in Bronze Age Greece wore rings forged from meteoritic iron — an extraordinarily rare metal that fell to Earth from space.

The findings, published in the August 2026 issue of the Journal of Archaeological Science, come from an analysis of 91 iron artifacts excavated at 33 archaeological sites in Greece and Crete. Using portable X-ray fluorescence technology, researchers Matthieu Gounelle and Eleni Mantzourani detected unusually high levels of nickel in 13 objects. Because iron meteorites naturally contain significant amounts of nickel, the researchers concluded that about 10 of the objects were very likely made with extraterrestrial iron.

And there was something particularly revealing about those objects: all 13 were rings or fragments of rings. Most were elaborate bezel rings and many combined the meteoritic iron with gold, silver or bronze. With several discovered in elite tombs alongside other valuable objects, the researchers believe these unusual rings may have served as symbols of power and prestige among Minoan and Mycenaean elites.

The jewelry was extraordinary not only because of where its iron came from, but because of when it was made.

During the Bronze Age, terrestrial iron-smelting technology was still extremely limited in the Aegean. That meant meteoritic iron offered an incredibly rare source of workable metal long before iron became widely produced from earthly ores.

That celestial origin likely added another layer of prestige. Across the ancient world, meteorites and other objects that fell from the sky could inspire awe and religious associations. To Bronze Age people, a metal that arrived from the heavens could reasonably have been perceived as something extraordinary — perhaps a gift from the gods or a tangible connection to another world.

So where did the Greeks get celestial iron? Researchers suggest Egypt may have been an important source. Meteorites are relatively scarce in Greece and Crete, while Egypt's vast, arid deserts provide ideal conditions for preserving meteorites on the surface. The Minoan and Mycenaean cultures likely traded for the metal via their extensive connections with Egypt and the Near East.

The fashion, however, apparently did not last forever. Meteoritic-iron rings disappear from the archaeological record around the 12th century BCE, roughly coinciding with the collapse of the Late Bronze Age palatial civilizations.
