Cheers, applause and astonished gasps erupted on August 12 across parts of Greenland, Iceland and northern Spain, where spectators gathered for a fleeting celestial spectacle — a total solar eclipse. In the moments just before the Moon completely slipped in front of the Sun, briefly transforming daylight into darkness, viewers were treated to one of the most dazzling sights in the sky: the “Diamond Ring Effect.”
In Spain, the excitement was especially profound. The eclipse marked the country’s first total solar eclipse visible from the mainland in more than a century, and crowds from Galicia to the Mediterranean coast watched the Sun disappear. As totality arrived, spectators rose to their feet, cheered and applauded as the daytime sky suddenly darkened.
For jewelry lovers, however, one of the most memorable moments came immediately before and after totality.
The Diamond Ring Effect gets its name from its uncanny resemblance to a spectacular piece of jewelry. As the Moon moves across the face of the Sun, the solar disk gradually disappears. Just before totality, the rugged edge of the Moon allows tiny shafts of sunlight to shine through lunar valleys. These points of light are known as Baily’s Beads.
Eventually, just one brilliant bead remains. Set against the faint, ghostly glow of the Sun’s outer atmosphere — the corona — it looks remarkably like a diamond mounted on a luminous celestial ring. The effect can appear again as totality ends, when sunlight begins peeking through the valleys on the opposite edge of the Moon.
The phenomenon has a long history. English astronomer Francis Baily called attention to the beads after observing a solar eclipse in 1836. His description helped establish the phenomenon that now bears his name.
The visual magic is possible because the Moon and Sun appear almost exactly the same size from Earth. The Sun is vastly larger, but it is also vastly farther away. That extraordinary cosmic coincidence allows the Moon to cover the Sun almost perfectly during a total eclipse, revealing the normally hidden corona.
The August 12 eclipse offered particularly dramatic views in Spain, where totality occurred late in the day and the Sun was low on the horizon. In Iceland, crowds also celebrated as the landscape plunged briefly into darkness, although clouds obscured the spectacle in some locations.
