Music Friday: Lee Ann Womack Grapples With Betrayal in 2001 Ring-Themed Hit
Author:
Howard Cohen

Welcome to Music Friday, when we revisit songs that shine a spotlight on jewelry, gemstones or precious metals. Today’s feature — “Does My Ring Burn Your Finger?” — finds Lee Ann Womack delivering one of the most emotionally raw performances of her career, using a wedding band as a powerful symbol of a love gone wrong.

Released in 2001 as part of her acclaimed album I Hope You Dance, the song tells the story of a wife grappling with betrayal. Her husband has strayed — and in a telling, heartbreaking gesture — he’s removed his wedding ring. What was once a cherished emblem of eternal commitment now seems to “burn,” as if the promise it represents has become too heavy, too guilt-ridden, or too inconvenient for him to bear.

She sings, “Did my ring burn your finger? / Did my love weigh you down? / Was a promise too much to keep around?”

The brilliance of the song lies in that central metaphor. A wedding band is traditionally a circle without end — a timeless expression of unity and devotion. But here, it transforms into something almost physical in its discomfort. Womack’s character wonders: Is it the weight of his infidelity that makes the ring unbearable? Or has the meaning behind it simply faded? The unanswered questions linger like an open wound.

Written by the husband-and-wife songwriting team of Buddy and Julie Miller, the track first appeared on Buddy Miller’s 1999 album before Womack made it her own. Her version struck a chord with listeners, climbing to #23 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. Critics were equally captivated. USA Today famously named it the #1 song of 2001, praising Womack’s “searing, chill-conjuring performance.”

That intensity was on full display during her unforgettable live rendition at the 2001 CMA Awards — a performance so moving that even seasoned critics struggled to put its impact into words. Womack didn’t just sing the song; she embodied the anguish of a relationship unraveling in real time.

More than two decades later, Womack remains a vital voice in country and Americana music. She continues to tour selectively and is slated to appear at Alan Jackson’s Last Call: One for the Road Finale in June 2026. She has also released new material this year, including the introspective track “Middle Of A Storm.”

Born and raised in Jacksonville, TX, in 1966, Womack developed a love for country music at a young age. Her father was a DJ and often brought her to work to help him pick his playlist.

She emerged as a contemporary country artist in 1997 and was favorably compared to Dolly Parton and Tammy Wynette. Womack has released nine studio albums and sold more than six million albums worldwide. She has received five Academy of Country Music Awards, six Country Music Association Awards and a single Grammy Award.

Please check out the audio track of Womack performing “Does My Ring Burn Your Finger?” The lyrics are below if you’d like to sing along…

“Does My Ring Burn Your Finger?”
Written by Julie Miller and Steven Paul (Buddy) Miller. Performed by Lee Ann Womack.

When I gave you my heart
It was not what you wanted
Now the walls say your name
And the pictures are haunted
Does my ring burn your finger
Did my love weigh you down?
Was a promise too much to keep around?

I remember your words and I can’t keep from cryin’
I could never believe that your kisses were lyin’
Was there somethin’ from the past
Buried in a shallow grave?
Did you think that it was too far gone to save?

Please tell me baby
Please tell me now
You say that I should just go on
Now please tell me how, how, how

Now it’s just me and the night and I’m so broken hearted
I just wait in the dark here for my dearly departed
Did my ring burn your finger?
Did my love weigh you down?
Was a promise too much to keep around?
